Additive manufacturing (AM) is redefining industrial design and production, with significant implications for the automobile and aerospace sectors. This chapter explores the effects of integrating additive manufacturing (AM) with sophisticated smart materials such as shape memory alloys, piezoelectrics, and thermoelectrics on manufacturing processes, product functionality enhancement, and resolution of industry-specific challenges. Studying the relationship between additive manufacturing (AM) and these materials highlights their essential role in producing high-performance, customized components. The analysis demonstrates that the incorporation of this technology can redefine established patterns in industry, foster the development of new products, and enhance the range of applications. By showcasing the compatibility of smart materials with additive manufacturing (AM) techniques, it is demonstrated that these materials can produce components that exceed the limitations of traditional manufacturing in terms of complexity, efficiency, and sustainability. This differentiation sets this chapter apart from previous studies. Furthermore, the focus on technological advancements that enhance this compatibility underscores its practical applications and potential future progress. Documenting the notable improvement in additive manufacturing (AM) and intelligent materials provides a basis for continued research and development in order to advance further the use of smart materials in vital industrial sectors. This sets up opportunities for future study that are anticipated to continue transforming the manufacturing industry. © 2025 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.
