Abstract

Evaluation of hepatoprotective activity of extracts of Cuscuta reflexa (Convolvulaceae) on Isoniazid (INH) and Rifambicin (RIF) induced hepatotoxicity rats. Hepatotoxicity was observed by biochemical measurments: Serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activities, γ- GT the levels of total bilirubin were evaluated. There was a significant decrease in serum parameters in extract and standard drug treated groups. Histopathological changes were also observed in livers of animals that received extract and standard drug. Industrial relevance: The data generated in this study suggest that Cuscuta reflexa, could be very useful in the management of hepatoprotection on INH and RIF induced hepatotoxicity. Further studies will still be required at identifying the active hypoglycaemic phytoconstituents and their possible mechanism. © 2010 Healthy Synergies Publications. © 2013 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.
