Background & objectives: Ceruloplasmin is a copper containing alpha <inf>2-</inf>glycoprotein with iron (II)-oxygen oxido reductase (ferroxidase) enzymatic activity. It is primarly produced by the hepatic parenchymal cells as an acute phase protein. It increases in viral hepatitis, hepatocellular degeneration and cirrhosis of liver. The aim of the study was to evaluate the ceruloplasmin as a probable diagnostic marker in chronic viral hepatitis. Methods: The present study includes a 50 known chronic viral hepatitis cases and 20 age and sex matched healthy controls. Ceruloplasmin, total bilirubin, alanine amino transferase, alkaline phosphatase and total proteins were estimated in all the subjects respectively. Results: Ceruloplasmin was increased in cases than controls and it was statistically highly significant. The total bilirubin, alanine amino transferase and alkaline phosphatase measured were increased in cases than controls respectively. The difference in the means of each parameter between cases and controls was statistically highly significant. There was no statistically significant difference in the means of total proteins between cases and controls as p = 0.658260. Interpretation & Conclusion: This study showed a significant increase in the level of ceruloplasmin in chronic viral hepatitis cases than healthy controls and holds a good diagnostic value in the diagnosis of chronic viral hepatitis causing partial intra hepatic obstruction. Our study reveals that, increased ceruloplasmin along with increased alanine transaminase and normal alkaline phosphatase is more confirmative diagnosis of partial intra hepatic obstruction. © 2012 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.
