Abstract

Objective: Anaemia is a serious public health problem in Indian school children. This study examines the prevalence of anaemia and its anthropometric correlates in school children. Methodology: A total of 306 children, aged 6-11 years, attending school in an urban area were included. Anthropometric examination and haemoglobin (Hb) estimation were performed for all children. Details about the socio-demographic factors were collected from their parents. Anaemia was defined as haemoglobin less thanll.5gms/dl, as per WHO standards. Children were categorised as underweight, stunted and thin based on their weight, height and BMI and their anaemic status was assessed. Results: The overall prevalence of anaemia was found to be 71.5%; significantly more in girls than boys. Anaemia was significantly associated to educational status of the parents of these children. The mean height and weight of anaemic children was significantly less when compared to the non-anaemic children. The severity of anaemia was found to be mild. Conclusion: Anaemia in association with malnutrition is highly prevalent in schoolchildren and more in the girls. The parents' education contributed to occurrence of anaemia. © 2013 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.
