Introduction: Reaction time (RT) is an index of processing ability of the CNS and a simple means of determining sensory motor coordination and performance. Very few studies have been conducted on the effect of single pranayam technique on physiological parameters. Aim: Hence, in this the effect of Kapalabhathi on cardiovascular function and reaction time was assessed. Materials and Methods: The present study was conducted on 60 volunteers of 19-25yrs. The subjects were randomly assigned to pranayam and control groups. The pranayam group was taught Kapalabhathi by trained yoga teacher and practices same under the direct supervision for 30 min per day, thrice per week for total duration of 12 weeks. Control group were not practice pranayam. All the physiological parameters were recorded before and after 12 weeks of the study period. Statistical analysis was done by student's t test. Results: In pranayama group, BMI were significantly lower in males and females respectively. VRT was significantly lower in females of kapalabhathi group at the end of study period. Both ART and VRT were lower in males as compared to females after pranayam training. Discussion: From this study, it was found that ART as well as VRT shorten after 12 weeks of training and practice of Kapalabhathi pranayam. This may be due to greater arousal, faster rate of information processing and improved concentration. © 2016 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.
