Abstract

When it comes to biometrics, the finger vein modality is crucial because of its unique properties. However, there are two problems with the current vein verification systems: first, they only capture a 2D image of the vein and iris from one side of the finger using a monocular camera. While operating in contact-free mode, it gathers minimal information on vein patterns for validation purposes and produces discernible differences in results when samples of the same person are taken from various locations on the iris and finger veins. The efficiency of the system is negatively affected by both of these problems. Current systems tend to be more attuned to variances in iris and finger vein location especially those caused by pitch and roll changes. A lot of work has gone into trying to fix this problem in recent years, but it's still not easy. An innovative software and hardware platform is presented in this paper for collecting full-view vein and iris pattern information from whole fingers and iris using three cameras. Then, a full-view 3D image of the finger veins and iris is built using a novel 3D reconstruction method. The system is completed with a corresponding 3D feature of the finger veins and iris. The experimental results show that the new method not only improves recognition performance compared to the traditional single-view 2D method of finger vein recognition, but it also fully utilizes the extra valid information provided by iris and finger vein biometrics. © 2025 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.
