Abstract

One of the major factors which affect the durability of reinforced cement concrete is steel corrosion. This can be stopped by providing sufficient cover to the reinforcement, preparing admirable quality of concrete, and reducing water cement ratio. Further these factors are not sufficient in the case of splash zones. Number of structures constructed as per the codal provisions were subjected to steel corrosion. Eradicate the problem of corrosion is most important in structure situated in severe environment. This research focuses on non-destructive results observed from a detailed experimental study was conducted to examine the structural behaviour of reinforced concrete corroded columns. Scale model reinforced concrete columns were cast by replacing 20% cement by fly ash to the concrete and subjected to accelerated corrosion process in the laboratory by electrochemical method. Rebound hammer, ultrasonic pulse velocity, open circuit potential measurements values were taken at regular interval to assess the quality of concrete. pH value and chloride content of the cover concrete were tested after the target level of corrosion. An equation was also suggested for rebound number and compressive strength relation. The proposed equations were validated through the previous findings of the different researchers available in the literature. After the destructive test weight loss measurement of corroded steel were observed to assess the corrosion level. It was concluded that non-destructive testing techniques are the most important tools to assess the structural integrity there by to carry out proper maintenance and to ensure the safety and serviceability of the structures.
