Abstract

Forensic pathologists in a civil setting rarely come across deaths due to blast injuries. Injuries from explosions arise in several ways. In temporal order these include tissue damage from; the blast shock wave (primary blast injury), material propelled into the casualty (secondary), the casualty propelled against other objects (tertiary), heat, chemicals and toxins delivered by the device (quaternary) and finally the systemic inflammatory response provoked in the host (quinary). Here, we report a case of an adult male working in a stone quarry, who was thrown away by a blast. He was brought dead to our hospital. At autopsy, he showed characteristic blast injuries, the death was attributed to blast lung injury. © 2025 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.
