Abstract

Introduction: Vitiligo is a hypomelanotic, systemic disorder characterized by depigmented patches of different sizes and shapes in the skin resulting from the loss of functional melanocytes and melanin from the epidermis and also affects stria vascularis of inner ear 1. The aim of this study is to Evaluate Audiological changes by using Brain stem evoked response audiometry (BERA) and Otoacoustic emissions (OAEs) in patients with Vitiligo. Materials and methods: After obtaining ethical committee approval for 40 patients, consent was obtained from all the patients. Complete otorhinolaryngology examination followed by Otoacoustic emission was done. A series of sounds of short span was given to the ears. Results: In our study OAE reveals abnormal findings suggesting hearing loss in majority of 15(57.7%) patients with duration of 1�5 years followed by 9(34.6%) patients with duration of 6�10 years and 2(7.7%) patients with duration of > 10 years. Findings were normal in 11(78.6%) patients with duration of 1�5 years followed by 2(14.3%) patients with duration of < 1 year and 1(7.1%) patient with duration of 6�10 years. Conclusion: Patients in our study did not show any evidence of hearing loss clinically but there were significant changes seen in OAE and BERA. All the patients with vitiligo should undergo audiological evaluation with OAE and BERA to detect any early changes in the hearing status. © 2025 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.
