A Novel Video Codec, L Shaped Morpho Codec (LSMC), based on Lifting Wavelet Transform (LWT) is proposed. Each video frame is decomposed into sub-bands using LWT. Significant pixels are tracked in scan order and morphological dilation is applied using L-shaped structuring element to improve rate-distortion performance. Experiments show LSMC outperforms SPIHT and SPECK for lossy and lossless compression. Lossy compression performs better at higher bit rates; lossless requires fewer bits per pixel than SPECK. © 2013 IEEE. © 2014 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.
