Abstract

This study hypothesizes mechanisms underlying HIV-associated peripheral neuropathy. Potential factors include adrenal insufficiency/steroid resistance and lipodystrophy-induced cushion-effect loss in peripheral nerves. Steroid management during high inflammatory periods and optimized treatment may alleviate severity of neuropathic manifestations in HIV-1 infection. © 2011 Elsevier Ltd. © 2012 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.
