Carbon prepared from henna (Lawsonia inermis) leaves was used to study adsorption of Cr(VI) and Cu(II) ions from aqueous solutions. Effects of pH, contact time, initial concentration, and adsorbent dosage were evaluated. Adsorption increased with pH from 1 to 7 and then decreased. Maximum removal occurred with 0.7 g adsorbent at 100 ppm metal ion. Data fitted Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms. Cu(II) removal was higher than Cr(VI). Henna-derived carbon is effective for removing heavy metals from aqueous solutions. © 2013 T. Shanthi and V. M. Selvarajan. © 2012 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.
