This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence and nature of swallowing difficulties in individuals with Parkinsonâs Disease (PD) using the Sydney Swallow Questionnaire (SSQ), in comparison to an age-matched Neuro-Typical (NT) elderly population. Participants included individuals diagnosed with PD and a control group of NT elderly individuals. The SSQ was used to assess the presence and characteristics of dysphagia. Results showed that 83 of individuals with PD reported symptoms of dysphagia, compared to only 13 of the NT group. Individuals with PD predominantly experienced difficulty swallowing thick liquids and hard foods, as well as symptoms such as coughing or choking on solids and a sensation of food sticking in the throat, often leading to prolonged mealtimes. In contrast, the NT group primarily reported challenges with dry and hard foods and chewing difficulties related to dental issues, along with some reports of difficulty swallowing the first bolus of the day. The findings support the SSQ as a reliable and effective tool for identifying oro-pharyngeal dysphagia across populations. The study emphasizes the need for targeted interventions to address the specific swallowing challenges experienced by individuals with PD, essential for improving swallowing function and quality of life. Early and proactive management may help reduce the risks associated with dysphagia, such as malnutrition, dehydration, and aspiration pneumonia. © 2025 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.
