Introduction: Elderly population in India was 7% in 2001, expected to rise to 9% by 2016. Chronic morbidities like diabetes and hypertension are common among geriatric population. Aim: Assess prevalence of diabetes and hypertension among rural elderly in Attayampatti village, Salem district. Materials and Methods: Cross-sectional study on 400 elderly using pre-tested questionnaire, measuring BMI, random blood sugar, and blood pressure. Results: Diabetes prevalence 36% (males 22%, females 15%), hypertension 59% (males 33.3%, females 26.2%). Mean BP 140/100 mmHg, mean RBS 180 mg/dl. Age, BMI, and smoking significantly associated with diabetes and hypertension. Conclusion: Early identification through periodic screening and regular health checkups is essential. © 2014 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.
