Abstract

Background: It is not uncommon to see nonunion of fractures in long bones. Among the various reasons, the nutrient artery plays an important role. Objectives: This study analyzed nutrient foramina in dry adult humerii regarding number, size, and location with respect to surfaces, zones, and distance from midpoint. Materials: Humerii from various medical colleges of Vinayaka Missions University, Salem, were included, excluding damaged or pathological bones. Parameters noted were length, number, size, location of nutrient foramina, and distance from midpoint. Measurements used osteometric board and hypodermic needles. Dominant foramen size was measured if multiple foramina existed. Statistical analysis included mean, range, and standard deviation. Results: 258 humerii were studied. Mean length: 27.96 cm (SD 2.18), mean foramen size: 0.828 mm (SD 0.26), mean distance from midpoint: 2.31 cm (SD 1.25). Majority (86.43%) of foramina located in middle 1/3, 13.57% in lower 1/3. Surface location: anteromedial 89.92%, posterior 8.53%, anterolateral 1.55%. © 2014 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.
