In this paper, the (2+1)-dimensional sine-Gordon equation is revisited using the Truncated Painlevé Approach. Solutions are obtained in terms of lower-dimensional arbitrary functions of space and time. By harnessing these arbitrary functions, dromion solutions are constructed and their collision dynamics are analyzed. Additionally, controllable dromion pairs are demonstrated, showing that their dynamics can be switched ON or OFF, and their orientation can be modified. Other localized nonlinear excitations including compactons, rogue waves, and lumps are also generated and their evolution is investigated. © 2018 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.
