Abstract

The scarcity of nonrenewable energy sources is imminent, and their environmental impacts have drawn the attention of the researchers toward bio-based alternatives. Biofuel production under the integrated concept of biorefineries becomes inclinations in many countries around the world. One volume of crude glycerol has generated a byproduct during 10 volume of biofuel production under transesterification process. Glycerol is a high energy and carbon compound which finds its diverse applications in economically valuable end product food industry, chemical industry, polymer industry, personal care products, therapeutic, and diagnostics applications. Impurities present in crude glycerol inhibit its effective usage in industrial application. Assessing a wide range of technologies on purifying crude glycerol helps to produce a high-value chemical which, in turn, builds the economic development of bio-based industries and reduces environmental pollution. Production of high-platform chemicals helps from crude glycerol helps to achieve the major output of integrated biorefinery concept. © 2021 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.
