Abstract

Vitiligo is an acquired multifactorial depigmentation disorder, distressing to patients and caregivers. Childhood vitiligo has different characteristics than adult-onset. This study analyzed 50 children (<12 years) at Vinayaka Missions Hospital, Karaikal (Jan 2015–Jan 2020). Mean age of onset was 5.8 years; mean duration 1.4 years. Most common site: head/neck; most prevalent type: vitiligo vulgaris (60%), followed by acrofacial (26.5%), focal (23.7%), segmental (2.6%). Family history positive in 5 patients; mucosal involvement in 12%; leukotrichia 11%; Koebner phenomenon 10%. Body involvement bilateral in 72%, unilateral 28%. Majority (49%) had >5 lesions; 96% had <5% BSA involved. Evaluation and follow-up are essential; management should consider disease extent, psychological impact, side effects, and potential autoimmune associations. © 2023 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.
