Abstract

This study investigated perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) in edible parts of vegetables, soils, and irrigation water in greenhouse and open fields in Shouguang city, China, near a fluorochemical industrial park. Bioaccumulation factors (BAFs) were calculated, and human exposure to PFAAs via vegetable consumption for different age groups was estimated. ΣPFAA levels ranged from 1.67 to 33.5 ng/g dry weight (dw), with perfluorobutanoic acid (PFBA) as the dominant compound (average 49% of ΣPFAA). Leafy vegetables showed higher ΣPFAA levels (8.76 ng/g dw) than fruit and root vegetables. Log<inf>10</inf> BAF values decreased with increasing chain length, PFBA having the highest average (0.98). Cabbage had highest PFBA bioaccumulation (log<inf>10</inf> BAF 1.24). Greenhouse soils and vegetables showed higher contributions of PFBA, PFHxA, PFPeA, whereas PFOA contribution was lower compared to open field. Irrigation water was an important source in greenhouse, while atmospheric deposition contributed in open fields. Maximum exposure to PFOA for preschool children (2–5 years) reached 63% of the EFSA reference dose. Recommendations for mitigating human health risks were provided. © 2020 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.
