Abstract

A case-control study investigated the risk factors of pharyngeal cancers in 30 cases and 90 hospital-based controls over 2 years. Habits examined included tobacco smoking, alcohol consumption, pan-tobacco chewing, and dietary factors. Males were predominantly affected (9:1 ratio), especially over 60 years of age. Significant associations with cancer risk were found for beedi smoking, alcohol intake, and pan-tobacco chewing, whereas salted/smoked fish showed no significant effect. The study emphasizes public health education to discourage tobacco, alcohol, and pan-chewing habits to reduce cancer risk.
