Abstract

In a global context characterized by a rapid and significant increase in the need for electricity and the accumulation of power system burdens, buildings emerge as a substantial consumer of energy, accounting for approximately one-third of the planet's primary energy resources. The deployment of an integrated energy management system is crucial in order to sustain the quality of electricity within these structures. For more than twenty years, researchers have been diligently working towards the attainment of this objective; nonetheless, the pursuit continues to present significant challenges. The incorporation of intelligent building systems is positioned to establish the groundwork for an infrastructure that not only provides a secure environment but also prioritizes the well-being and satisfaction of its inhabitants. One significant advancement in this quest is the emergence of smart grids, which effectively integrate various renewable energy sources into intelligent structures. This paper aims to enhance the overall efficiency of a smart building by facilitating the optimal exploitation of photovoltaic electricity. The energy efficiency achieved in buildings leads to significant economic savings and, importantly, a notable decrease in the carbon emissions associated with a particular location. This review article also emphasizes the utmost importance of energy efficiency in buildings, not alone from an economic perspective, but also within the framework of environmental responsibility and worldwide sustainability. A variety of methods and technologies are being explored to pave the way for advanced energy management systems. Through a thorough examination of current scholarly literature, a consensus among researchers emerges: the fusion of smart technology and energy-efficient green building methods is universally acknowledged as vital for the evolution of intelligent and eco-friendly buildings. These cutting-edge architectural designs are anticipated to effortlessly integrate into the intelligent urban environments of the future, thereby advancing our progress towards a more environmentally friendly and sustainable global society. © 2024 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.
