Wheeze has been defined as a high-pitched, continuous musical noise often associated with prolonged expiration. Individuals who are exposed to cold air are subjected to various physiological changes in both upper and lower respiratory tracts. Common occupational cold exposure occurs usually in air-conditioned companies and other cold storage factories. Among them, information technology (IT) companies have numerous computer systems, which basically need a mechanism of cooling to compensate for heat produced by computers and generators. Aim: To determine the prevalence of wheezing among IT workers and the association between cold environments and induced factors affecting respiration. Method: A community-based cross-sectional survey study was conducted on a sample of 507 men and women between 21 and 60 years of age who worked in IT companies. Demographic data and data based on occupation, general health, airway symptoms and their severity were collected. For the evaluation of respiratory illness among IT workers, St. George�s respiratory questionnaire was used. Results: From the scores obtained, cough was reported by a significant proportion of IT employees, with a prevalence of 51.89; sputum production 56.20; shortness of breath 25.84; attacks of wheeze 33.90; attacks of chest trouble 16.78. Conclusion: Hence, there is a moderate level of prevalence of airway symptoms among the IT community. © 2025 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.
